Problems with Virge GX on Solaris 2.6
I didn't solved problem completly, but I found that there is a lot of
people that have this same problem with their S3 Virge based VGA
cards.
The only thing I found so far (in the article posted by somebody that
calls himself "RuffNeck <ruffneck@ruthless.nl.com>" on
alt.solaris.x86) is that only in resolution 1024x768 with 256 colors
Xsun works as it should (which appears to be the default resolution
that kdmconfig will suggest on theese cards). In any other resolution
or color depth, the problem with fonts is back. Makes me wonder
whether SUN tested their X server on Virge cards in any other
resolution than 1024x768x256 for longer than 5 minutes...
So, for now there are basicly two solutions:
- use 1024x768x256 mode
- buy VGA card based on some other chipset
For now, I'm using the 1024x768x256 mode, and I'm planning to get some
cheap Trio64 or Mach64 based card with 2MB of RAM and use it in
1152x900 with 32k colors until SUN fixes bug in their X server.
I also tried to use XFree86 X server, but for some strange reason on
Solaris 2.6, applications from /usr/dt/bin and /usr/openwin/bin will
not run on it localy ("can't connect to display :0"). On Solaris
2.5.1 this worked.
