Solaris 2.6 and Solstice Enterprise Agent SNMP daemon

Nobody responded, which I find weird, either because I would assume

that there must be *somebody* else out there who has tried using the

Solstice Enterprise Agents 1.0 that come bundled with 2.6

(since my opinion of the snmpd that ships with SunNet Manager

is less than favorable)...anyhow, I ended up calling Sun and the

response that I got back was:

Sun: "You're using the Agents that come bundled with 2.6 aren't you?"

Me: "Yes, why, are they broken?"

Sun: "There are too many problems to list."

The original Sun tech I talked to couldn't find my error in their

sunsolve database, nor could I find a mention of this problem at the

sunsolve web site. It's a well-kept secret at sun, apparently!

So, the solution is to get the latest Solstice Enterprise Agents

package, version 1.0.2, freely available somewhere on www.sun.com that

should also come bundled with a patch to apply after installing it.

Apparently, there are instructions for how to uninstall the old, broken

version and install the new, fixed one.

DO NOT INSTALL Solstice Enterprise Agents off the Solaris 2.6 CD! Get

this new package instead.

Before Solaris 2.6, I was using the SunNet Manager 2.3 snmp daemon on

each machine. However, the Solstice Enterprise Agent SNMP daemon ships

with Solaris 2.6 so I would much rather use that. It appears that it

is a better product than the SunNet Manager daemon.

However, on each machine with it installed, I get this error when

trying to use 'snmpwalk' to walk the MIB tree on that machine.

snmpwalk works just fine on machines running the SunNet Manager snmp

daemon. snmpwalk doesn't return any errors, just no data at all from

the Solstice Enterprise Agent SNMP daemons with this error:

Mar 12 17:22:05 dorf snmpdx: agent snmpd not responding

The only process with the string 'snmp' in it is:

root 1440 1 0 Mar 20 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/snmp/snmpdx -y -c /etc/snmp/conf

Is there be an 'snmpd' process as well or is snmpdx the only process

needed? The configuration for this is right out of the box except for

my customization of /etc/snmp/conf/snmpd.conf to set the system

variables.
