You don't have the following entries in /etc/inetd.conf

# rpc.metad

100229/1 tli rpc/tcp wait root /usr/opt/SUNWmd/sbin/rpc.metad rpc.metad # rpc.metamhd

100230/1 tli rpc/tcp wait root /usr/opt/SUNWmd/sbin/rpc.metamhd rpc.metamhd

Include these in /etc/inetd.conf and then HUP it.

I had the problem once - it was very annoying.....

For some reason the package installer never updated the inetd.conf file.....

The rpc daemons you need are the files rpc.met*d in the disksuite directory.
You can run them and use metatool immediately.

Do you have rpc.metamhd running ?

# rpcinfo -p localhost | grep meta

i would check for both rpc.metad & rpc.metamhd under:
/usr/opt/SUNWmd/sbin

Is this line in /etc/inetd.conf
# rpc.metamhd
100230/1 tli rpc/tcp wait root
/usr/opt/SUNWmd/sbin/rpc.metamhd rpc.metamhd

I am not sure but this may be your problem, There is also a start script
that runs in /etc/rc2.d

disksuite generally makes these entries in inetd.conf for RPC programs.

# rpc.metad
