sun4c vs sun4 issue yet remains in 4.1?

The overwhelming answer is YES, you need sun4c tapes (not sun4) to

install 4.1 on a SS1 or SS1+. Apparently, there are three separate

4.1 versions for Sun sparc machines:

sun4 (low and mid-range sparc server machines)

        sun4c (SS1 and SS1+)

        sun4 PSA (High end sparc servers -- 4/390, 4/490, 4/470, ...)

And there are two 4.1 versions for the sun3 line:

        sun3 (MC68020 based systems: 3/160, 3/60, 3/50, ...)

        sun3x (MC68030 based systems: 3/470, 3/80, 3/480, ...)

So the moral of the story is twofold:

        1) Make sure you order the correct OS version for the machines

you have! Specify the appropriate part number on your

           purchase order.

        2) Call your Sun sales representative or technical support

people and ask them why Sun haven't integrated sun4 and

sun4c architectures into one release yet. This issue might

be ameliorated somewhat next year when Sun starts

distributing its OS only on compact discs (CD-ROMs), but

that still isn't any reason to have 5 different versions of

           the OS hanging around.
