Sparc-10/512 crash (mutex not owned by thread)

Original Message:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something strange happened to our Sparc-10/512 today. Looks like

it just decided to reboot itself. There was no core file left in /,

so it didn't leaving a dump behind...

  Checking /var/adm/messages shows:

It was pointed out that Solaris2.3 does not dump its core to / as

did 4.1.3 -- the "dump" files unix.o and vmcore.0 are written to

/var/crash/`uname -n`. These files are only written if then lines

requesting them in /etc/init.d/sysetup are uncommented. Since our

system hadn't requested the dumps, it's no surprise that they weren't

written! I have uncommented the appropriate lines to save the core

in case the machine crashes again so we can analyze what jobs were

running at the time that caused (?) the crash...

Several people recommended installing the latest set of recommended

patches for Solaris 2.3. Those patches that are available that are

more recent than the above are:

Patch-ID# 101317-08

Synopsis: SunOS 5.3: lp jumbo patch

Patch-ID# 101318-41

Synopsis: SunOS 5.3: Jumbo patch for kernel (includes libc, sendmail, lockd)

Patch-ID# 101329-13

Synopsis: SunOS 5.3: Jumbo NIS+ patch, automountd security, autofs and loopback mounts

I installed these patches, hopefully the latest kernel patch will help

things along. So far, we're still up and running, but, if it does

crash again, we'll have some more diagnostics to sort out the problem.
