Stupid me. I thought that if ~/.xinitrc existed that it was read in from

/usr/openwin/lib/Xinitrc. It is not. If ~./xinitrc exists it is run

INSTEAD of /usr/openwin/lib/Xinitrc.

The solution then is to copy /usr/openwin/lib/Xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc, and

to add the xmodmap commands near the end of the file (just before the

wait command).
